Microfiber Mops, The Right Way To Clean Your Hardwood Floors.

Categorized: Floor Cleaning Supplies | No comments

Microfiber mops are the most popular purchased floor cleaning supplies item by home owners with hardwood and tile floors.  They have replaced the more traditional cotton loop-end mops and cut-end wet mops.   These microfiber mops are commonly called microfiber dust mops, and major brand names include “swiffer” mops, “starfiber” mops, and “Bona” mops.

So what exactly are these new mops and why should you consider using them?  It has to do with surface area.  The microfibers pick up and trap dust and dirt particles inside the micro-grooves of the fiber.  Each mop pad is made up of over 2 million yards of microfibers, which according to the manufacturers, will give you 30 times the cleaning power of an ordinary cotton mop head.  The mop pads are made from very fine threads of polyester and polyamide (nylon) that are combined to form a thread.  Each of these threads is 100 times thinner than a single human hair!  When they are woven together is gives a surface area 40 times more than a regular fiber.

Why is it so helpful and what are the benefits?  The microfibers trap bacteria so you don’t need to use harmful disinfectant chemicals on your floors.  The Polyester fibers are lyophillic, it has an affinity to oil, and so any oils or grease on your floor adhere to the fibers and are removed.  Polyamide (nylon) fibers are hydrophilic, it has an affinity to water and so water is removed from the floor leaving a streak-free and sparkling surface.   The fiber will not scratch or leave any lint and it is safe on all delicate surfaces.  You can clean using only water.  You can usually wash the microfiber mop head in your washing machine so you will save money because you don’t have to keep purchasing expensive disposable mop heads.  You can even dust your walls and ceiling with this mop!

How do you use the microfiber mops?  If you just want to dust and sweep, use the microfiber dust pad without water and glide the pad over your surfaces.  When it becomes filled with dust and particles just take the pad off the base and shake the pad out to remove the dust and dirt particles.  Re-attach the pad and keep dusting.  If you want to do a deep cleaning on your floor surface, just dampen the mop pad in warm water and squeeze out the excess water before you start.  It can be used on all surfaces.
We think all home owners with hardwood floors should try this product, you will not be disappointed.
