Using homemade grout cleaner is an inexpensive way to keep your tiled walls and tiled floors looking great. Grout is placed in between tiles to hold them in place and also fill the void space between the tiles. Grout is made from cement and resin. It is highly porous and will easily absorb dirt, oils, and in a moist environment can harbor mold and mildew. Each of these will cause a discoloration of the grout and make your tiled surface look terrible. Grout should be cleaned often to prevent discoloration and the frequent purchase of special grout cleaner chemicals will be expensive, not to mention many of these chemicals are dangerous for the environment. Homemade grout cleaners work as well as the harsh expensive chemicals, and are also ecologically friendly.
For normal frequent cleaning, use liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Just rub the grout surface gently and rinse with warm water. This will work to keep dirt from getting into the pore spaces. But what if your gout is already stained? Some readily available household chemicals like table salt, baking soda, vinegar, and ammonia can be used to lift the stains from your grout.

Just mix chlorine bleach and water and apply it to your tiled grout. This is really effective in the shower and it will also work on floor tiles. If you have colored grout, then you should be cautious before using bleach, it can discolor your colored grout. Test it on an inconspicuous grout location before applying to the rest of the area.
